Clad in Green

The exterior cladding of the homes at Las Casas Verdes consists of limestone and HardiPlank. Both of these materials are locally-sourced, the limestone from the Hill Country and the HardiPlank produced just south of Dallas. By sourcing these materials locally, less carbon is created in delivering them to the site.

HardiPlank is a fiber-cement siding made of wood pulp, cement, sand and water that has been recycled up to four times. The raw materials are low in toxicity and extracted and processed near the production site, further lessening carbon produced by transport. Along with the carbon reductions from decreased transport and low toxicity, HardiPlank also lowers impact on the environment by being a very durable material, warranted for fifty years. Other advantages include being highly insect resistant, fire resistant, and easily paintable. Las Casas Homes have a 15 year paint warranty on their hardiplank as well.

Starting with a Firm Foundation

In creating a place for yourself and your family, what effect do you have on the earth? Las Casas Verdes have been designed to impact the earth at a much lower level than traditional housing. One of the many ways that the architect, David Martin, has focused on reducing the carbon footprint of these homes is by using local and recycled materials.

The pad for the foundation is totally cmposed of receycled concrete materials. Slab concrete is normally made of an aggregate, usually sand and gravel, and a cementing agent, traditionally portland cement. For the homes at Las Casas Verdes fly ash, a fine powdery carbon waste product from coal-fired power plants, is a dded a a replacement for some portion of the cement used in the concrete mix and is actually stronger than traditional portland cement. It also allows for easier pumping of the concrete, which lowers the energy costs of concrete production.

Reuse the Rain

At Las Casas Verdes, each home includes a fully integrated rainwater collection system, available for use on the landscaping outside the home and also to cover many water needs in the home. Each home is also connected to the City of Austin water system, so that supplemental water is available. Austin averages thirty-two inches of rain per year and an 1800 square-foot area with an efficient rain harvesting system can gather more than 32,000 gallons of water per year, or almost ninety gallons a day. In general, the quality of rain water is very good. The softness of rain water is valued for its cleaning abilities and benign effects on water-using equipment. As an irrigation source, its acidity is helpful in the high pH soils of our region and, as one would expect, is the best water for plants. Rain water is better for you, your plants and your pocketbook. Collecting rain water also helps keep chemicals out of the water cycle by decreasing the need for water treatment, and reduces the energy spent moving water about the city, as it is already conveniently located at your home.

For the Kids

Need a little more room to run than is available in the small park located with Las Cassa Verdes? Head up the road less than a half mile and romp in 20-acre family-oriented Longview Park. Longview itself has a playground, picnic tables, a softball field and basketball court and leads into the trails of 147-acre Stephenson Nature Preserve.

Heat Rises

Sometimes, we forget the simplest principles. The designers of Las Casas Verdes use slightly more sophisticated strategies like the stack effect to induce airflow. When warm air rises and leaks out at the top of a building, cooler air is drawn in at the bottom. Each home in the neighborhood incorporates a heat chimney to implement the stack effect, harnessing the sun to heat air and create a convection current to keep the residents cooler.
