Reuse the Rain

At Las Casas Verdes, each home includes a fully integrated rainwater collection system, available for use on the landscaping outside the home and also to cover many water needs in the home. Each home is also connected to the City of Austin water system, so that supplemental water is available. Austin averages thirty-two inches of rain per year and an 1800 square-foot area with an efficient rain harvesting system can gather more than 32,000 gallons of water per year, or almost ninety gallons a day. In general, the quality of rain water is very good. The softness of rain water is valued for its cleaning abilities and benign effects on water-using equipment. As an irrigation source, its acidity is helpful in the high pH soils of our region and, as one would expect, is the best water for plants. Rain water is better for you, your plants and your pocketbook. Collecting rain water also helps keep chemicals out of the water cycle by decreasing the need for water treatment, and reduces the energy spent moving water about the city, as it is already conveniently located at your home.
